25 Years of Helping Families Conceive - Over 4,000 babies born with help of LHSC program

(LONDON, Ontario) – In honour of Canadian Infertility Awareness Week May 18-24, 2008 London Health Sciences Centre’s (LHSC) Reproductive Endocrinology and Infertility Program (REI) is celebrating 25 years since its inception. The REI Program has helped families give birth to more than 4,000 babies.

“LHSC’s REI Program unites the most advanced assisted reproductive technologies with a caring and personalized approach to patients,” says Dr. Valter Feyles, Senior Medical Director, REI Program.

Dianne and Paul Maiorana know first hand the challenges that can be faced during pregnancy, having experienced several difficult and painful ectopic pregnancies. After turning to LHSC’s REI program for assistance, the Maiorana’s are now the proud parents of 3-year old twin boys. “I am so pleased that we were referred to LHSC,” says Dianne. “The physicians were phenomenal, and the knowledge and attention of the nursing staff made us very comfortable and confident with the program.”

Dianne is again pregnant with twin boys, due in August. “Our house will be very busy, that’s for sure! We are so grateful to the wonderful staff and physicians at LHSC for all they have done for us.”

The REI Program offers a full range of treatment services that includes in-vitro fertilization (IVF) and treatments for various fertility issues such as endometriosis, polycystic ovarian syndrome, ovulatory disorders, age, unexplained infertility and male factor infertility. Assisted reproductive technologies also offer options to those not wanting to pass on hereditary conditions.

“In consultation with patients, each fertility program is tailored to meet their individual needs,” says Feyles. “The team at REI is committed to helping couples realize their dream of conception.”

Recent data suggest that approximately 700,000 Canadians are unable to achieve a pregnancy naturally and suffer from infertility during their childbearing years.

The REI Program is inviting couples seeking information about infertility treatments to a drop-in session to meet members of the specialized medical team on Thursday May 22, 2008 between 7 p.m. and 9 p.m. at the Best Western Lamplighter Inn located at 591 Wellington Road, London.
