President’s Award Recipient Recognized for Outstanding Community Service
(LONDON, Ontario) – Janice McCallum is the first recipient of the President’s Award for Outstanding Volunteer Community Service at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC). Cliff Nordal, President and Chief Executive Officer, announced the award today at the LHSC Annual General Meeting. McCallum is Director of Acute Medical Care and Community Transition at LHSC and received the award for her volunteer work with the Victorian Order of Nurses (VON), the Girl Guides, Thames Valley District School Board and the Registered Nurses Association of Ontario.
The annual award recognizes an LHSC staff member, physician or hospital volunteer whose volunteer achievement has made a difference to the lives of people in the community. It was established in 2006 to honour the community service legacy of Tony Dagnone, LHSC’s first President and CEO.
“LHSC is a hospital of caring people who keep on giving even when their shift is over,” said Cliff Nordal. “Through her volunteer efforts with the Victorian Order of Nurses, Janice has demonstrated dedication, enthusiasm and leadership.” In October 2006, McCallum was named Board Chair of VON Canada, a registered charity that provides home-based community health care to some 1,300 communities. She has been a volunteer member of VON for 20 years.
The Annual General Meeting took place in the shell of the North Tower at Victoria Hospital, the future home of the Children’s Hospital of Western Ontario and the Grace Donnelly Women’s Health Pavilion. When complete, the ten-storey, 620,000 square foot facility will also house the hospital’s acute mental health program, medical and surgical inpatient units, and clinical laboratories. The 150 meeting attendees were able to view plans for the completed interior.
London Health Sciences Centre released its 2007 Report to the Community at the Annual General Meeting. The report provides a statistical overview of hospital operations in 2006-07, as well as highlights of the year, including a profile of the hospital’s transplant program, which recently marked its 30th anniversary.
Speaking at the AGM, Board Chair Doug Alexander saluted the accomplishments of the past year. “On behalf of the Board, I want thank the leadership, staff, physicians, students and volunteers for their hard work and dedication to providing the very best in patient care at London Health Sciences Centre,” said Alexander.
