London Health Sciences Centre achieves Excellent Results in OHA Hospital Report 2002

(LONDON, Ontario) - Today, the Ontario Hospital Association (OHA) released its Acute Care Hospital Report 2002. This is the fourth year in which London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has participated in this study, which is the most comprehensive study on hospital performance in Canada.

"LHSC has performed very well in all four areas in this report," remarks Tony Dagnone, President & CEO. "In fact, in all 34 reportable indicators across the four areas, LHSC performed either at or above the teaching hospital group average. This is a tremendous accomplishment - one that is directly attributable to the caring and dedicated staff and physicians at this hospital. These results are their results."

Most notably, LHSC scored above the provincial average in the following areas:

  • Overall satisfaction with care and services
  • Satisfaction of care and services received from hospital physicians and nurses
  • The ability to manage patient information to better coordinate care, both within the hospital and with community partners

LHSC showed its greatest improvement from last year in the System Integration and Change section, specifically for the innovative ways in which we use clinical and administrative data, and for the way in which patient care is coordinated among our many different caregivers and specialties.

"These results are a testament to the high personal standards our staff and physicians hold for the quality of care they deliver. It also speaks to the skill and innovation of our leaders in managing our limited resources in the face of growing financial pressures," adds Dagnone.

While LHSC scored either at or above the peer group average in the financial area of the report, the results do indicate that hospitals in Ontario, including LHSC, are dealing with significant financial pressures.

"This report tells us that we are highly effective and efficient using the dollars we have and that our patients are quite satisfied with the overall care and services they have received," says Dagnone. "It also indicates, however, that like all hospitals in the province, we don't have the working capital to operate to our fullest potential."

"It is our hope that the Kirby Report and the Romanow Report, along with the current national/provincial dialogue now underway, will result in solutions."

The following overview indicates results in each of the four areas, or quadrants, within the report:

System Integration and Change:
This quadrant describes a hospital's ability to adapt to its changing environment. More specifically, it examines how clinical information technologies, work processes, and hospital-community relationships function within the hospital system.

  • All 10 indicators scored either at or above the peer group average. LHSC was the only hospital in all its peer group to score above average (five stars) in the use of clinical data to manage change and better coordinate patient care.

Clinical Utilization and Outcomes:
This quadrant describes the clinical performance of hospitals and refers to such things as access to hospital services and quality of care received by patients..

  • All seven reportable indicators scored either at or above the peer group average. LHSC was the only hospital in the peer group to score above average (five stars) in stroke length of stay which indicates the average number of days a patient with a stroke is in the hospital.

Patient Satisfaction:
This quadrant examines patients' perceptions of their hospital experience, including their perceptions of overall quality of care, and their thoughts on the quality of the bedside care and physician care they received..

  • All eight indicators scored at or above the peer group average.

Financial Performance and Condition:

This quadrant describes how hospitals manage their financial resources and human resources.

  • All nine indicators scored either at or above the peer group average.
