Cancer Care Ontario President unveils new linear accelerators at London Health Sciences Centre’s London Regional Cancer Program

For Immediate Release:
April 29, 2009

(LONDON, Ontario) –Terry Sullivan, President and CEO of Cancer Care Ontario, was at London Health Sciences Centre’s London Regional Cancer Program today to unveil two new, state of the art linear accelerators designed to individualize treatment and advance patient care at LRCP.

The accelerators, part of LHSC’s radio therapy program, are revolutionary pieces of equipment that allow health-care workers to see a patient’s anatomy in 3 dimensions, and thereby provide image-guided treatment. Precise imaging allows for more specific targeting of cancer cells, and decreases the need to treat normal tissues.

"Upgrading Ontario’s radio-therapy program is an important part of Cancer Care Ontario’s three-year Ontario Cancer Plan,” said Sullivan. “I am thrilled to be able to be here for this announcement today and look forward to seeing the added benefits this equipment brings to the patients of LRCP.”

Dr. Michael Lock, Medical Director of Radiation Oncology at LRCP, said the new linear accelerators will be an integral part of improving wait times and speeding patient access to care.

"Treatments that currently take over 10 minutes can be completed in two minutes with this new equipment. These machines employ technology that represents a new standard of care for speed, precision and patient comfort,” said Lock.

The first linear accelerator will be fully operational in June 2009, and the second will be operational this fall.

This project was made possible through the generous support of Cancer Care Ontario and the generous support of donors, through the London Health Sciences Foundation.
