President’s Award for Physician Leadership
Dr. Cheril Clarson is section head of paediatric endocrinology at LHSC’s Children’s Hospital and an associate scientist at Lawson Health Research Institute.
Dr. Clarson is a dedicated clinician with over 30 years’ experience, managing a considerable clinical workload, teaching, and significant research studies.
As section head, Dr. Clarson sets high standards for herself and her colleagues. She shares expertise and knowledge with new learners and encourages her co-workers to set achievable goals. Dr. Clarson is described as authentic and straight forward in her leadership style, and someone who truly loves what she does. She is receptive to input, and makes decisions for the benefit of the whole team.
Dr. Clarson shows deep respect for patients and their families, making sure she is well prepared for clinical duties, taking the time to get to know the families she serves, and delivering excellent care. She offers the same treatment to staff by acknowledging individual contributions, and making sure everyone feels included and valued. In 2004 she initiated an annual full day diabetes team meeting for planning and implementation of strategic priorities for care delivery, education and research.
Under her leadership, important changes within endocrinology have occurred to enhance patient care, and Dr. Clarson is a strong advocate for the department in optimizing patient care.
