LHSC leads the province in Donation after Cardiac Death (DCD) organ donors

For Immediate Release:
June 1, 2010

(LONDON, Ontario) – Of the 100 organ donations after cardiac death in Ontario, London Health Sciences Centre is the provincial leader accounting for a quarter of all DCD donors.

LHSC’s practice for coordinating end-of-life care is to have a discussion with all families whose loved ones meet the conditions for DCD organ donation. DCD is the donation of organs from patients who are pronounced dead on the basis of cardiac and circulatory criteria. Made in accordance with the Trillium Gift of Life Network Act, DCD respects the unique needs of the potential donors and their families.

Says Dr. Michael Sharpe, Consultant for LHSC’s Medical Surgical Intensive Care Unit: “The option of DCD is offered only after the patient has met very specific conditions and the family has decided to remove their loved one from life support. As direct result of the 25 cases of DCD, 63 organs were transplanted into 60 patients within Ontario, including 44 kidneys, 14 livers, four lungs and one pancreas.”

DCD is an opportunity for families to support the wishes of their loved ones to save and enhance more lives at the end of life. For more information about organ donation visit the Trillium Gift of Life website at http://www.giftoflife.on.ca/
