Sue Brighton

2011 Recipient

President’s Award for Living Our Core Values – How We Serve Our Patients

Susan Brighton

Sue Brighton has worked at LHSC for more than 30 years, most recently as nurse practitioner for the vascular surgery division at Victoria Hospital.

Those who nominated Sue describe her as the ideal candidate for the President’s Award for Living Our Core Values – How We Serve Our Patients, noting that people like Sue come along once in a lifetime.

Sue has the respect of all who work with her, because she accepts and honours the individuality of each and every person. At times, some patients come to LHSC in difficult financial circumstances and their clothes are not in great condition. Through her tremendous dedication to patients, Sue created and maintains a “closet” of used and new clothes to help patients get a fresh start once they leave the hospital

A strong and caring advocate, Sue’s nomination included a letter from a former patient whose son’s life was saved thanks to Sue’s determination to ensure he received timely and appropriate care. And after a long-time patient on the vascular floor wanted desperately to attend his granddaughter’s wedding, Sue organized a fundraiser to help raise the money necessary for transport, and then accompanied him on her own time to the wedding to provide additional care support.

Sue is described by her colleagues as a consummate guardian angel for her patients, truly living LHSC’s core values of respect, trust and collaboration with every patient she helps.
