Highlights of the Year

of the Year

Last April, LHSC’s London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP), unveiled two new, state-of-the-art linear accelerators allowing healthcare workers to see a patient’s anatomy in three dimensions, and thereby provide image-guided treatment. Precise imaging allows for specific targeting of cancer, and decreases the amount of normal tissue treated, improving the efficiency of the treatment and shortening the length of time the patient needs to undergo the procedure.

Canadian First in Lung Cancer Treatment
This past summer, LHSC and Lawson Health Research Institute announced a Canadian first in the treatment of lung cancer; removing a small wedge from the patient’s lung and applying a surgical mesh interwoven with radioactive seeds to where the lung was resected.

2009 Employee Giving Campaign raises $178,434
The LHSC Employee Giving Campaign raises funds for hospital programs and the broader community. Essentially three campaigns in one, LHSC staff and physicians raised funds for United Way of London & Middlesex, London Health Sciences Foundation and Children’s Health Foundation.

LHSC has its own Olympic moment
While the Olympic torch was on its cross-country tour leading up to the opening of the 2010 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games, it made a special stop in London visiting patients at Victoria and Children’s Hospitals on Christmas Day.

Working together for optimal dialysis care
Following a 10-month study to determine the feasibility and effectiveness of providing peritoneal home dialysis patients with touch screen technology and access to a health coach from home, LHSC became the first hospital in North America to provide this innovation for dialysis patients.
