President and Chief Executive Officer Cliff Nordal
“My health administration career has taken me to six teaching hospitals over 41 years. However, the highlight of my career has been the 12 years right here in London and the past five years as shared CEO.”

Message from the President and Cheif Executive Officer

For more than 135 years, London Health Sciences Centre has been caring for you, and innovating for the world. Since 1948 we have achieved over 50 Canadian, North American and world firsts. Each year, we care for more than one million people from London, southwestern Ontario and beyond. Our proud tradition of caring and innovation is, quite simply, in our DNA.

In this report to the community we review our year, provide an update on future directions, and profile four individuals who make a difference every day in the lives of our patients. They are just a snapshot of the more than 13,000 staff, physicians, students, researchers and scientists providing care and leading innovation.

The people of LHSC are recognized internationally for their significant contributions to the advancement of health care. In turn, each year we recognize those staff marking 10 or more years of dedicated service at LHSC. The 2009 Service Awards, Celebrating our Champions was a tremendous evening showcasing the accomplishments of 1,067 people. Over 200 of those individuals were honoured for more than 30 years of service to LHSC. Their long history of caring and innovating is improving the lives of people everywhere.

Over the last year, LHSC has celebrated a number of key accomplishments:

  • Hospital restructuring saw significant advancement as a firm timetable for program moves was established and we began to see occupancy of clinical spaces in the new North Tower at LHSC’s Victoria Hospital.
  • LHSC and Lawson Health Research Institute (Lawson) announced a Canadian first in the treatment of lung cancer using radioactive seeds.
  • We announced a dramatic improvement in hand hygiene compliance rates which have directly impacted the reduction in number of C-difficile cases.
  • The first ever recipients of the President’s Award for ‘Living our Core Values’, both How We Work Together and How We Serve Our Patients were awarded.
  • We established designated smoking areas for our three hospital sites, helping to Clear the Air for a healthier community.
  • We ended the fiscal 2009/2010 year in a balanced position thanks to the diligence of our staff, physicians and leaders who focused on providing access to quality care, while also making responsible financial and operating decisions.

My focus this year has been on the development of a leadership framework for planning, decision-making, reporting and quality of care. These frameworks will provide clear indications on the work we are doing, and the processes in place to achieve the end results. This framework includes four components:

  1. Quality Strategy – supporting the mission of LHSC through strategic planning, leadership, patient/family focus, workforce focus, process improvement, measurement, analysis and knowledge management and results.
  2. Hospital Operating Budget Guidelines – balancing our yearly budget through consistent timelines and engagement processes.
  3. Performance Indicator Reporting – measuring, monitoring and reporting on quality/safety, human resources, utilization of service and financial performance indicators.
  4. Strategic Planning Process – articulating how the mission and vision of our organization is going to be realized over a defined period of time.

Developing these frameworks has been important to me as earlier this year I announced that I will be retiring as the shared President and CEO of both LHSC and St. Joseph’s Health Care, London, in January 2011. My health administration career has taken me to six teaching hospitals over 41 years. However, the highlight of my career has been the 12 years in London and the past five years as shared CEO.

In the coming months my primary focus is to ensure a smooth transition as the Board recruits a new CEO to lead this hospital in the years ahead. It has been, and continues to be, an honour to serve at London Health Sciences Centre.

I want to thank the staff, physicians, researchers, scientists, students and volunteers of LHSC for their commitment and dedication to caring for our patients and leading our organization to new heights through innovation.

Caring for You. Innovating for the World.® It’s in our DNA.
