Newborn Screening

Newborn screening is available to every newborn in Ontario. Newborn screening is a specialized way of identifying newborns that are at risk to have a disorder that can lead to significant health concerns, even death. Many of the conditions screened for are metabolic in nature, while others are endocrine and hematological in nature.

All screen positives are seen at our clinic by a genetic counsellor, nurse and often a physician. Within the Medical Genetics clinic, only Metabolic screens are seen. If confirmatory testing reveals a newborn has a particular metabolic diagnosis than they are followed and managed through the Inherited Metabolic Disease program.

Currently, close to 30 conditions are screened for. All samples are initially processed within the Ontario Newborn Screening Program (ONSP) at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO).
