On January 4, LHSC opened a Discharge Lounge at University Hospital on the 5th floor, adjacent to the elevators.
Patients who no longer require acute care at LHSC and are ready for discharge can go to the Discharge Lounge to wait for their ride home. These patients will be dressed and able to comfortably sit in a chair and will come from all programs and services at UH.
The lounge will be staffed by members of the health-care team to ensure safe, quality patient care and will be open from 7am to 7pm, seven days a week
“We expect that the availability of the lounge will improve more timely admission of patients from all admitting locations including the ED and operating rooms,” says Carol Young-Ritchie, VP Medicine, Critical Care and Family Medicine. “This will allow us to clean the rooms faster and put new patients into the beds sooner. Minutes make a difference when we are dealing with high patient volumes.”
The project is a pilot for three months and we will be able to determine the full impact at the end of this time. Our evaluation will look at patient access and flow metrics along with patient feedback to ensure the lounge meets discharged patients’ needs.
“This has been a collaborative project, under the leadership of Ann Turcotte, Director of Medicine and Andrea McInerney, Director of Cardiac Care, with all programs and services working together to launch the Discharge Lounge,” says Cathy Vandersluis, VP Surgical Services, Cardiac Care and Neurosciences. “Thank you to all the leaders and staff who made it happen in a short period of time.”
This initiative supports our Strategic Directions to:
· deliver exceptional quality and safety, and
· ensure organizational and resource alignment.
The Discharge Lounge aims to assist patients and families get the care they need, when and where they need it.
