Did you know that heart disease and stroke take one life every seven minutes and 90% of Canadians have at least one risk factor? Although you cannot regulate all of the contributing factors, there are some risk factors that can be controlled. These include high blood pressure (hypertension), high blood cholesterol, diabetes, being overweight, excessive alcohol consumption, physical inactivity, smoking, and stress.
Hypertension or high blood pressure is called the "silent killer" because often there are no warning signs or symptoms, and many people don't realize they have hypertension. It's important to get your blood pressure checked regularly.
Smoking and exposure to second-hand smoke have many negative health effects that increase your risk of developing heart disease and stroke. Making the decision to become smoke free will have great benefits for your own health and the health of those around you both immediately and over your entire lifetime. The Heart and Stroke Foundation recommends Canadians make active living a part of their daily lives. During the month of February try to increase your activity level on a daily basis. Including physical activity in your life on a regular basis can help improve your heart health, assist you to lose weight, and even help decrease your stress levels. There are many simple, yet effective ways to be more active including going for a walk or taking the stairs, just adding in one flight at a time can make a difference. Try parking your car further away from the entrance or even consider leaving your car at home and walking to work.
