Each May London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is pleased to celebrate National Nursing Week, which takes place this year May 6-12. The week serves as an opportunity to recognize nursing professionals for the many contributions they make to the well-being of Canadians.
This year the International Council of Nurses (ICN) has selected the theme Nurses: A Voice to Lead – Health for All, which reflects the fact that “every nurse has a story and every story has the potential to improve the health-care system and enable individuals and communities to achieve their highest attainable standard of health”. The sentiment of the theme certainly holds true at LHSC where our 3,600 nurses are represented in many roles across the organization, including research, education, leadership, quality, advanced practice, and at the bedside providing direct care to our patients.
LHSC is pleased to celebrate all of its nurses this week for their steadfast commitment to providing safe, high-quality care while ensuring that patients are at the centre of everything we do; and for the invaluable insight our nurses bring from their collective experience as we work together to fulfil our vision of shaping the future of health.
Nursing Week has been providing nurses around the world the chance to celebrate the work they do to keep Nightingale’s work alive since 1971 when the International Council of Nurses designated May 12 – Florence Nightingale’s birthday – as International Nurses Day. In 1985, in recognition of the dedication and accomplishments of the nursing profession, the Canadian minister of health proclaimed the second week of May as National Nursing Week in Canada.
Thank you to all of our nurses.
