The summer months are typically when the need for blood is highest, coinciding with the time when donations are at their lowest. As health-care providers, LHSC has an imperative to help maintain a stable blood supply, which is why its staff and physicians are once again participating in the Canadian Blood Services Hospital Challenge, aiming to donate the most blood units in June and July amongst hospitals in south-central Ontario.
Friends and family members of LHSC staff are also eligible to donate as an LHSC Partners for Life member. Register online or let CBS staff know you want to be an LHSC Partners for Life member the next time you donate. (LHSC ID LOND012624). Because each hospital's tally is tracked through Partners for Life donations, it is important for you to be registered as a PFL member before you donate.
Need more incentive to donate? Here are the top 10 reasons why you should roll up your sleeve today:
#10 – Patients in London will need at least 1,126 units of blood in June & July – help us get there!
#9 – About 100,000 new donors are needed every year in Canada to meet demand – and you get a sticker if you’re a new donor!
#8 – Nobody can ask you to do any heavy lifting as long as you have the bandage on. You can wear it for as long as you like - it's your badge of honour!
#7 – Your donation can touch so many of our patient’s lives. Blood is a critical part of everyday medical care at LHSC, used in surgeries, procedures, cancer treatments and disease management.
#6 – Because someone in Canada needs blood approximately every minute of every day
#5 – It’s easy and convenient. It only takes an hour – just visit the main blood donation centre at 820 Wharncliffe Rd. South or one of London’s mobile clinics.
#4 – It’s something you can spare. One donation is just 1 pint of blood, and the average adult body has 10-12 pints.
#3 – You will be helping to ensure that blood is there when you or someone close to you may need it.
#2 – You get free juice and cookies (as many as you want!) after you donate.
#1 – Because you can. Most of us are eligible to donate every 56 days. Take this short eligibility quiz to find out if you can donate.
