London Health Sciences Centre’s Facilities Management department and the hospital’s landscape partner, Clintar, have joined together to ‘adopt’ the Westminster Ponds, Environmentally Significant Area (ESA). The adoption of the ESA is a volunteer program which involves two trail cleanups a year in an effort to improve the environmental integrity of Westminster Ponds.
Saturday, April 28th marked the first Westminster Ponds – ESA cleanup as 35 dedicated volunteers braved the cold to collect over 20 bags of garbage along the paths of the ESA.
The morning began with warm cups of coffee and muffins to fuel everyone to march nearly 10 km of trails. Three groups took separate paths to divide and conquer over 200 hectares of land. The children participating in the event particularly enjoyed trudging through the muddy trails to collect as much litter as they could. The cleanup ended with a BBQ lunch provided by Clintar.
The large turnout on a less-than-perfect weather day truly speaks to everyone’s commitment to the community and protecting the beautiful environments we are fortunate to enjoy.
The next cleanup will be scheduled for early fall. We hope to have the same level of enthusiasm and participation at our next dog-friendly event.
Thanks again to all of the volunteers who participated in the cleanup!
