Laparoscopy is a surgical technique to explore or operate inside the abdomen using a small telescope with a fiber optic system, called laparoscope, inserted through a tiny incision under the belly button. During the operation, a gas is used to expand the abdomen, to allow the doctor to see the organs. With the use of the laparoscope, the doctor can examine the organs, remove small samples for further investigation, treat some areas with laser or correct some abnormalities.
This technique is suggested for various reasons:
- Pain in the abdomen
- Scar tissue around the organs called adhesions
- Hysterectomy or removal of other organs
- Treat conditions such as endometriosis, pelvic inflammation diseases (PID)
- Find causes to explain infertility including ovarian cysts and fibroids
- Ectopic pregnancy
- Tubal ligation
