Risk associated with procedures to remove eggs in IVF, ICSI and egg donation

  • Risks associated with sedation and local anesthetic : Sedation is a safe procedure but here can be potential adverse reactions to drugs. Such risks can be present in any elective procedure or surgery.

  • Risks associated with egg retrieval: During the retrieval of eggs, a needle is inserted through the vagina, into the ovaries to collect the follicular fluid containing the eggs. Although rare, it is possible to puncture the structures surrounding the ovaries such as bladder, bowel and blood vessels during this procedure. Very rarely surgery may be required to correct this problem.

Although very infrequent, egg retrieval might also result in an infection. Treatment includes providing an antibiotic.
