Launching London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute

Building on our 150-year legacy of advancing care through research, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) entered into a new era of hospital-based research in 2024 with the launch of its new research institute, London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute (LHSCRI). LHSCRI brings together some of the most brilliant minds in health care and science to pioneer discoveries that transform the health of patients around the world.

“Our new research institute is strengthening hospital-based innovation by driving new discoveries through laboratory science and testing cutting-edge treatments through clinical trials,” explains Dr. Chris McIntyre, Interim Vice President, Research, and LHSCRI Scientific Director. “At LHSCRI, we conduct research where care is delivered to advance the understanding, diagnosis, treatment, and management of diseases and health conditions — making a real difference in the lives of patients and their families in Ontario, across Canada, and around the world.”

Open house events

On October 16, 2024, LHSC officially launched LHSCRI by inviting staff, physicians, partners, community members, and government officials to open house events at Victoria Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and University Hospital. The events were hosted jointly with St. Joseph’s Health Care London as they launched their new research institute, Lawson Research Institute of St. Joseph’s.

The day featured guided tours of LHSCRI research labs and programs, including cancer research, clinical epigenomics, personalized medicine in paediatric oncology, nephrology, clinical neurological sciences, clinical pharmacology, mental health, and orthopaedics, as well as poster presentations showcasing LHSCRI’s cutting-edge research.

“The LHSCRI open house was an engaging and exciting way to showcase the incredible research happening across our hospitals,” says Dr. McIntyre. “Hundreds of attendees were taken behind the scenes to explore our research facilities, ask questions, and learn about the impact of our work.”

Looking ahead

With more than 2,300 active clinical research projects underway in 2024/2025, curiosity and innovation are thriving at LHSCRI. Research teams are evaluating new cancer treatments, leveraging artificial intelligence (AI) to diagnose rare diseases, developing advanced surgical techniques, pioneering epilepsy care for children, and much more. Through research, LHSCRI is shaping the diagnostics, treatments, and health-care procedures of tomorrow.
