As we reflect on the past year at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), we are reminded of just how much can happen in 12 months.
Our 2024/2025 Annual Report captures a transformative period in the life of our hospital – one marked by real challenges, but also by incredible resilience, innovation, and momentum. We are proud to share this reflection of how, together, we have continued to deliver on our purpose: to provide compassionate care, advance health research, and train the next generation of health-care providers.
Our theme for this year’s annual report – Momentum – is about moving forward with purpose. It’s about the meaningful steps we’re taking every day to improve our hospital and create a stronger, healthier LHSC. As we face our challenges head on, the sense of forward motion within our walls is undeniable. Across our programs, departments, and teams, we are enhancing patient care, building transparency and accountability, strengthening partnerships, and driving forward discoveries to support the communities we serve.
Among some of our most significant accomplishments this year were the announcement of the expansion of our Nazem Kadri Surgical Centre and the launch of London Health Sciences Centre Research Institute (LHSCRI), an achievement that positions us at the forefront of academic health care in Canada. This step forward reflects our renewed focus on research excellence and reinforces our role as a leader in discovery and innovation, which translates to real impact on the health and lives of people in our community, across the country, and around the world.
We also know that to move forward, we need to listen. And this year, we listened to what our community, staff, and partners had to say. It’s also why we created a Community Advisory Committee (CAC) that includes individuals who live in our community and care deeply about our hospital. They are helping us ensure our work reflects the needs of our community and the recommendations in their CAC Surveys Report and Action Plan are already shaping changes inside our hospital. We also started monthly Community Update Meetings to connect regularly with our community and share updates about our work. We know our hospital belongs to the community and we’re committed to keeping you informed.
Throughout the year, we’ve continued to lead the way in advancing care. From pioneering new cancer treatments to becoming the first hospital in Canada with four orthopaedic surgical robots, we’re helping to shape what’s possible in health care. We’ve expanded access and improved outcomes – reducing our surgical waitlist at Children’s Hospital by 26 per cent through the Make Kids Count initiative, expanding our Children’s Hospital Emergency Department, and investing in new diagnostic tools like the Free.Max MRI to reduce wait times and increase access. We’ve also extended our care through partnerships beyond traditional clinical settings – including providing a location for Youth Opportunities Unlimited’s (YOU) Community Youth Hub to provide housing and support for unhoused young people. These stories aren’t shared for recognition but to show you where we are, what we’ve learned, and where we’re heading. This report is a look inside a hospital that’s listening, learning, and doing the work to become stronger, more connected, and better prepared for the future.
As we look ahead, we remain committed to our work to improve our governance, operations, and finances, including returning to a balanced budget within the next three years. At the same time, we have refreshed and refined our internal controls through a commitment to policy enhancement and adherence along with bolstering our internal audit multi-year workplans. We’ve made some important progress, including through our detailed organizational review, which we will continue advancing over the next year. We know we have more to do, however, and we will continue to work together – along with Ontario Health and the Ministry of Health – to build an LHSC that is financially strong and resilient.
With strong momentum and a community that believes in us, we are confident that we will continue to grow stronger. We’re so grateful for the trust you place in us. Thank you for standing beside us and for being part of this journey, especially in this milestone year as we mark 150 years of great care, teaching, and research.
