What is Ventilator Associate Pneumonia?

Ventilator associated pneumonia is a pneumonia (lung infection) occurring in patients in an intensive care unit (ICU), requiring external breathing support from a ventilator. Rates are calculated by dividing the number of VAPs by the number of ICU patient days for patients 18 years and older.
