Waste

In 2022, the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) recycled over 1,535 tonnes of material!

LHSC has a variety of waste streams, which include the following:

  • General waste
  • Recycling
  • Organics
  • Chemical
  • Biomedical
  • E-waste

Figure 1 Summary

  • Garbage: Accounts for 49 percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022
  • Biomedical: Accounts for 16 percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022
  • Recycling: Accounts for 11 percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022
  • Confidential: Accounts for 10 percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022
  • Organics: Accounts for eight percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022
  • Other recycled material (e-waste, scrap, donations, wood pallets, furniture): Accounts for five percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022
  • Chemical: Accounts for one percent of the total waste produced by LHSC in 2022

LHSC was able to divert 34 percent of our waste from landfills in 2022!

Recycling material collected from our Single-Stream Recycling Program represented 11 percent of the total amount of recycled material LHSC diverted from landfills in 2022. Confidential material (or shredded paper) represented 10 percent of the total amount of recycled material LHSC diverted from landfills in 2022. Organics, primarily food waste and tissue collected by Retail Services and Patient Food Services, represented eight percent of the total amount of recycled material LHSC diverted from landfills in 2022. Other diverted material, comprised of e-waste, scrap metal, donations, wood pallets and furniture, represented the remaining five percent of all diverted material in 2022.

This was completed through many different avenues including:

  • The Organics Program
  • Shredded paper
  • The Single-Stream Recycling Program
  • E-waste collection
  • The Furniture Re-Use Program

We continuously look for new recycling methods to increase our diversion rate from landfills.
