LHSC continues to work towards making sure that all our primary hip and knee joint replacement surgeries are recieving prophylactic antibiotics in the appropriate amount of time before surgery.
We are utilizing a set of educational best practices in the form of Surgical Site Infection Prevention "bundles” from the Safer Healthcare Now! and the Institute for Healthcare Improvement (IHI). These “bundles” are a collection of best practice processes that help to reduce the incidence of surgical site infections. By using these bundles we can reduce the chances of a patient acquiring a surgical site infection at our hospital.
At our Victoria Hospital site, only a small number of these surgeries are performed, and often they involve trauma patients. In these types of cases, there are often many complicating factors. The process around timing of administration of antibiotics in these type of cases continues to be examined and standardized at Victoria Hospital.
