The Perioperative Blood Conservation Program (PBCP) works to decrease or completely avoid the need for blood transfusion in patients having an operation. However, in some patient situations, blood transfusion is the best option. The PBCP team uses a “blood management” approach, trying to help their patients to get well faster.
PBCP gives patients information about blood transfusions and other choices (depending on the kind of operation the patient is having and the patient’s health factors). The PBCP nurses help patients to learn about other options that might be possible. The PBCP nurses also help patients put into action the options that would be best for their care.
