Murray Glendining named President and CEO of London Health Sciences Centre

LONDON, Ont. – Ruthe Anne Conyngham, Chair of the Board of Directors at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), today announced that Murray Glendining has been named the hospital’s new President and Chief Executive Officer, effective immediately. Glendining brings a wealth of experience to the role at LHSC and assumes this position permanently after recently serving as Acting President and CEO at LHSC, demonstrating exceptional leadership, significantly advancing LHSC’s strategic objectives, driving engagement of front line staff and physicians through transformational change initiatives, and further strengthening partnerships with key system stakeholders.

“Murray was unanimously selected by the Board after a very extensive process to consider all potential options,” said Conyngham. “As a systems thinker, a collaborative partner and a respected advisor in health-care policy in the province, Murray is ideally suited to guide LHSC through the transformation underway in the sector. The appointment of a new CEO in a complex academic hospital like LHSC can be a disruptive event, so we are tremendously fortunate to have the best candidate for the job already within our leadership team.”

Glendining joined LHSC in June 2012 as Executive Vice President of Corporate Services and Clinical Support, responsible for Finance, Diagnostic Services, Clinical and Information Technology, Facilities Management, Business Development & Commercial Operations and Decision Support. Prior to joining LHSC, Murray spent ten years with Hamilton Health Sciences Centre as Executive Vice President of Corporate Affairs and later assumed the additional role of Regional Chief Information Officer for the Hamilton Niagara Haldimand Brant LHIN where he led the provincial strategy for an electronic health record within the region.

Educated at the University of Cape Town, South Africa, Glendining is a Chartered Accountant with extensive experience in the public and private sectors. His health-care background also includes CFO positions with a major academic health sciences centre and regional health authority in western Canada. He has also consulted extensively across North America with international corporations, working with a number of government agencies including the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care.

“With a deep understanding of all facets of Ontario’s health-care system, Murray is a strong advocate for, and partner in, driving positive changes that result in a better health system,” said Anthony Dale, CEO, Ontario Hospital Association.

“Murray deeply appreciates the importance of an integrated approach across London’s health-care system and indeed the region,” said Dr. Gillian Kernaghan, President and CEO, St. Joseph’s Health Care London. “I look forward to continuing to work closely with Murray to implement new models of service that create better outcomes for patients.”

Says Dr. Michael Strong, Dean of the Schulich School of Medicine & Dentistry: “Murray brings a tremendous understanding and insight into the complex changes that are upon our health-care systems, and is one of the leading proponents of working across all of our respective organizations in a highly synergistic manner. I am greatly looking forward to working with Murray to take our collaborative efforts, together with other partners, to even higher levels."

"It is a true honour to lead an organization like London Health Sciences Centre,” said Glendining. “I am highly confident that the talented team at LHSC, working closely with system and community partners, will successfully navigate the challenges ahead and continue to play a leading role contributing to the creation of a more efficient health care system that provides a seamless, high-quality experience for patients.”
