LHSC's South Street Hospital

After 138 years of patient care, LHSC’s South Street Hospital (SSH) officially closed its doors in January 2013, and the building was demolished in 2015. London Health Sciences Centre has now demolished the remaining administrative SSH buildings on the north side of South St. and Hill St. In accordance with a request from the City of London, LHSC did not demolish the Colborne Building (southwest corner of South St. and Colborne St.), the War Memorial Children’s Hospital, or the former Health Services Building as the City has identified them as possible heritage sites.

As of February 2020, the City of London owns all of the land associated with the former SSH.

Updates

October 5, 2018 (PDF)
London Health Sciences Centre has awarded a contract to Budget Demolition who will complete the final phase of the decommissioning of the former South Street Hospital buildings. This work involves demolition of the buildings on the north side of South Street, excluding the Health Services Building and former War Memorial Children’s Hospital.

Fencing will be erected around the buildings and decommissioning and demolition are expected to take approximately a year to complete.

During the demolition, we expect that there may be some disruption to the normal flow of traffic around the South St./Colborne St./Hill St. area. There may also be an increase in noise during certain phases of demolition. The health and safety of SOHO residents, and of all Londoners, is a top priority for us and the demolition of these buildings will be planned and monitored carefully.

LHSC has issued a Request for Proposal in anticipation of the next phase of decommissioning the hospital buildings on the north side of South Street. The successful proponent will be selected in March, 2017. Updates will be provided once the decommissioning timeline has been finalized. Information on City of London plans for the land and remaining buildings can be found on the city website.

April 26, 2016 - (City of London) Infrastructure Renewal Program

The City of London has advised LHSC that it is undertaking a construction project on South St. from Colborne St to Wellington St., on Hill St. from Waterloo St. to Wellington St. and on Waterloo St. from South St. to Hill St. More details on the scope and impact of this project, including contact information for any questions or concerns can be found in this City of London letter (PDF) which was recently shared with residents in the area.

April 15, 2016

London Health Sciences Centre has completed the process of moving all staff from the remaining South Street Hospital buildings on South Street and Hill Street in anticipation of decommissioning and demolition which will begin in early 2017. In order to preserve the integrity of the buildings until that work begins, Norlon Builders will be on site the week of April 18 to board up doors and windows. We do not anticipate any disruption to the neighborhood during this work.
