LONDON, Ontario – London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is pleased to support the release of a new book entitled So Long South Street – A Photographic History of Victoria Hospital by Ryan Craven with photos by Matthew Trueman. The book tells the story of LHSC’s South Street Hospital site, from its origins in the late 1830's to the demolition of the majority of its buildings in 2015. Historical text and images are joined by photos of the demolition.

This book offers the opportunity for Londoners to reminisce and pay tribute to the legacy of care that has been built at LHSC – a legacy that began at the former South Street Hospital.

“South Street Hospital was more than a health care facility.  It was a symbol of our city,” said author Ryan Craven. “Its grand buildings represented our community's progress and compassion.  Matt's photos of the demolition captured the grace and beauty South Street Hospital maintained even to her last days. This book is meant to honour the role the hospital has played in our community and serve as a memento for all the nurses, doctors and support staff who brought it to life.”

A launch event and book signing was held Wednesday at Victoria Hospital.

The book is available for purchase from each of the LHSC gift shops at University and Victoria Hospitals, as well as select local retailers such as Attic Books, Oxford Book Shop and Brown and Dickson.

“The effort and care Ryan and Matthew have put into capturing the history of South Street Hospital through this book is most appreciated and will allow our community to revisit special memories of the building for years to come,” said Murray Glendining, President and CEO of LHSC. “We cannot thank them enough for this wonderful tribute.”
