New Anticoagulation Clinic at the Forefront of Research and Patient Care
London Health Sciences Centre and Lawson Health Research Institute have launched a new clinic that will provide specialized care for patients requiring the use of blood thinners, especially the drug warfarin.
The first of its kind in Canada, the clinic will incorporate a personalized medicine approach to the management of patient anticoagulation therapy. This means that doctors will use information from the patient’s DNA to decipher what dosage of warfarin to prescribe the patient, which will play a crucial role in decreasing the number of adverse side effects.
The clinic, which is located at University Hospital, will initially serve patients referred by their doctors who have an irregular heartbeat (atrial fibrillation) and are starting anticoagulation therapy. However, they plan to expand their services to a wider base of patients who are on blood thinners in the coming months.
