Eric Lindros Donates $5 Million to London Health Sciences Centre

News Release
For Immediate Release November 8, 2007

London, Ont. – Hockey star Eric Lindros has donated $5 million dollars in support of London Health Sciences Centre. The gift is one of the largest one-time donations ever received by London Health Sciences Foundation and will support programs at the hospital including the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic where Eric was treated during his NHL career. The gift was inspired by the sport clinic’s co-founder, Dr. Peter Fowler.

“I trust Pete Fowler. I believe him to be simply the best,” says Eric Lindros. “Not only is he a world-class surgeon, but also tops as a teacher and inspiration to other doctors.”

Eric, a native Londoner was born at London Health Science Centre’s Victoria Hospital. He has been a long-time supporter of the hospital and Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic and is a perennial participant at the clinic’s fundraising golf tournament.

“Eric’s generosity is a tremendous boost to the dedicated team of researchers and healthcare workers at London Health Sciences Centre,” says Dr. Peter Fowler

Eric Lindros has made one of the largest personal philanthropic contributions of a sports figure in recent history.

“It is heartening to see celebrities involved in philanthropic endeavours and leading by example,” says Dr Bob Litchfield, Medical Director of the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic. “It is even more impressive when they make a personal contribution as Eric has done here today. London Health Sciences Centre is grateful to be the recipient of his generosity.”

When compared to the Giving Back Foundation’s “Giving Back 30” list from 2006 this
$5 million gift would have ranked Eric behind only Tiger Woods in personal charitable contributions by a sports figure.

“This significant donation is a testament to the world-class health care at London and we are very grateful,” says Cliff Nordal, President and CEO of London Health Sciences Centre. “To our knowledge this is the largest personal donation by a sports figure in Canada.”

Specifically the donation will help complete the Legacy Research building at London Health Sciences Centre’s University Hospital; a purpose built facility for the hospital’s research partner, Lawson Health Research Institute, housing the Brent and Marilyn Kelman Centre for Advanced Learning, The Dr. Sandy Kirkley Centre in Musculoskeletal Research, the Centre for Clinical Investigation and Therapeutics, and The Matthew Mailing Centre for Translational Transplant Research.

The gift will also establish a fellowship honouring the contributions and accomplishments of Dr. Peter Fowler to London Health Sciences Centre and through the Fowler Kennedy Sport Medicine Clinic. A world-leading specialist in sport medicine, Dr Peter Fowler has numerous awards and recognitions including his induction into the American Orthopedic Society for Sports Medicine Hall of Fame in 2007 and being the sole recipient of the title “Mr Sport Medicine” for 2007; only the second Canadian after the late Dr. Jack Kennedy to receive the award.

“Eric’s gift will transform orthopedic and sports medicine, research, and education: It will improve care here in London and across Canada for future generations, and it has the power to inspire further donations.” says Nordal, “Eric’s generosity will also benefit patients around the world through our training of healthcare practitioners, the pioneering of new surgical techniques and the sharing of our research discoveries.”
