World Cancer Day is February 4

February 2, 2018

Each year, World Cancer Day takes place on February 4 to unite the world in the fight against cancer. The day aims to save millions of preventable deaths each year through education, raising awareness and by encouraging people across the world to take action.

London Health Sciences Centre is home to the London Regional Cancer Program (LRCP) – a world-class cancer care facility. For more than 75 years, the LRCP team has been providing the highest quality care to patients and their families from across the region of southwestern Ontario.

LRCP provides inpatient and outpatient cancer care including radiation therapy and chemotherapy, as well as a full range of support services to help cancer patients and their families throughout the treatment process. Support services at LRCP include social workers, diet and nutrition counselling, a pharmacy, patient education programs, and a Patient and Family Resource Centre.

World Cancer Day is an especially meaningful day to this team and the patients and families they serve each day.

The theme for this year is: We can. I can. The idea behind it is for each of us to consider the many different ways we can contribute to reducing the global burden of cancer. Whether we’re acting as part of a larger group or individually, we can make a difference. Suggested we can-based initiatives include collective activities such as creating healthy cities and I can-based initiatives include things you can do on your own like making healthy lifestyle choices.
