Vascular Surgery & Cardiology

Program Description:

The Vascular Surgery and Cardiology unit within Surgical Services provides care for adult elective and emergency vascular patients, and medical treatment and interventions for cardiology patients. Within the unit there are 4 level-two cardiac-monitoring beds to provide closer observation for medically acute vascular surgery patients.

Multidisciplinary primary nursing care is provided in a medium to high acuity environment. The program is a vascular referral centre for South Western Ontario.

General Information:

Number of beds:

  • 28 beds, including four cardiac monitor beds
  • Four beds designated for cardiology patients

Team composition:

  • Nursing: Charge Nurse, Clinical Educator, Clinical Nurse Specialist, Nurse Practitioner, Registered Nurses, Registered Practical Nurses.
  • Health Disciplines: Dietitian, Physiotherapist, Physiotherapy Assistant, Occupational Therapist, Occupational Therapy Assistant, Speech-Language Pathologist, Social Worker.
  • Support Staff: Manager, Unit Clerks, Personal Support Workers, Secretaries, Chaplain.
  • Physicians: Consultants, Residents.
  • Pharmacist

Average length of stay: 

  • 5 to 7 days

Nurse to patient ratio: 

  • Day shift: 4 to 1
  • Night shift: 5 to1
  • Level two Cardiac Monitor room: 2 to 1

Location:

Hospital Site: Victoria Hospital, C5-400 and D5-100
 

Scheduling Information:

  • 8 and 12 hour shifts
  • Two days, two nights rotation and scheduling as per request

Background Essentials:

  • BCLS
  • No minimum experience required

Student Consolidation:

  • Year 2,3,4 and consolidation experiences are available.
  • Students are assigned to a preceptor to develop and consolidate experience and skills in the surgical field
