Mrs. Brown is admitted following a bowel resection with delayed primary closure and application of a VAC drainage system. She awakens abruptly, and begins to compete with the ventilator. She is grimacing in pain and grabbing her abdomen, despite having received morphine 4 mg IV 10 minutes earlier. Plans include daily surgical debridement and mechanical ventilation for the next few days. Which one of the following interventions should be carried out next?

1. Administer morphine 2-4 mg IV direct, q 10 minutes until patient comfort is achieved.

2. Administer midazolam 2-4 mg IV direct to facilitate patient relaxation.

3. Initiate an infusion of morphine at 5 mg per hour
