Our Service or Program

Children’s Hospital at London Health Sciences serves as a regional referral centre providing specialized paediatric services to children from birth to age 17 years across Southwestern Ontario. The southwest region includes the 10 counties of Grey, Bruce, Huron, Perth, Oxford, Elgin, Middlesex, Lambton, Chatham-Kent and Essex. The region has a population of 1.5 million, including approximately 434,000 children 17 years and younger. The region encompasses an area of 28,972 km2 and includes centres such as London, Windsor, Chatham, Sarnia, Stratford, and Owen Sound.

Children’s Paediatric Critical Care Unit is a new state of the art, 12-bed unit that provides care for approximately 760 children per year. The new PCCU, which was built in 2001, provides family-centered care, with a 24-hour visiting policy and some over night accommodation for parents. These twelve PCCU beds are appropriately configured and available for use at Children’s. In addition to serving the specialized paediatric needs of Southwestern Ontario, Children’s also supports other regions in the province, including northwestern Ontario through its transport system.

PCCU also operates a paediatric critical care response team (PCCOT) which includes an experienced PCCU nurse, a paediatric trained RRT and a paediatric critical care doctor . PCCU along with NICU operates an extended role paediatric and Neonatal transport team which operates 24/7 and transports critically ill neonates and children from community hospitals to London Hospitals. Paediatric critical Care is know for its exemplary research activities under the leadership of Dr Doug Fraser.
