About the Medical - Surgical Intensive Care Unit (MSICU)

The intensive care unit is an intimidating environment for most people. The following information will help you become more familiar with the unit, the reason your family member is here, and daily routines.

The ICU at University Hospital is split into two different units: The Medical Surgical ICU and the Cardiac Surgical Recovery Unit (CSRU).

If your loved one is a patient in the CSRU, please go to the CSRU family website. If your loved one is a patient in the Medical Surgical ICU (MSICU), please continue to use this website.

The Medical-Surgical ICU is a 24 bed unit that supports critically ill patients. The unit consists of 6 bays with 3-5 beds in each bay. The Extended ICU (EICU) is in Bay 6. The EICU is a special part of our unit where we support patients who require a longer period of treatment and ventilation.

Here are some key points to remember about the MSICU:

  • Regular visiting hours are from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m., and 8 p.m. to 9 p.m. daily.
  • Always announce your visit. Call ahead at (519) 685 - 8500 ext. 33361, or notify a volunteer when you arrive.
  • Understand the MSICU is unpredictable: things may not always go as planned.
  • Wash your hands or use hand sanitizer when entering and leaving the MSICU.
  • Please do not visit if you feel unwell, or have a cold or other respiratory infection.
  • Staff need to know what medications your family member takes, including over-the-counter medications, vitamins, and herbal supplements.  If you are aware of any medication use, please let staff know as soon as possible.
