What does rehabilitation involve?

Rehabilitation involves building up the body’s strength, re-learning necessary skills, and adjusting to changes in function as a result of illness or injury. It can be a long process, so it is best to have a plan.

Physiotherapists are integral to the development of this plan while patients are in intensive care, and reassess the patient’s plan of care on a daily basis. They aggressively mobilize patients towards patient specific goals to ensure the steps to recovery start as soon as possible. If you have questions about the goals of the physiotherapist with your loved one, please ask the bedside nurse for more information.

Your loved one is in charge of his or her rehabilitation, and the plan will reflect your family member’s goals. A number of different health care workers can help with rehabilitation. Some of the professionals involved include physiotherapists, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, dietitians, physicians, and nurses.
