What happens if the patient is not from London?

The Medical-Surgical ICU supports patients from the London community as a primary hospital, but also supports patients referred from other regions of Ontario when the skill and technology of this hospital cannot be provided in a patient’s home hospital. All patients from outside of the London area will be cared for in our ICU for as long as these patients require our skills, technology and expertise.

Once the patient no longer requires the specialized skills and technology of LHSC, our ICU team will start a discussion about a transfer back to the patient’s home hospital. If the patient’s care needs cannot be met in the home hospital, then he or she will not be transferred.

If you have any questions about this, or concerns with the process, please see the bedside nurse.
