Electrophysiology Fellowship

Electrophysiology Lab

The Cardiac Arrhythmia and Electrophysiology Service at University of Western Ontario (London Health Sciences Center, University Campus) offers a 2-year fellowship program with an emphasis on clinical training and research for successful applicants. A one-year training program is also available to some candidates on a case-by-case basis. During this two-year fellowship, fellows present regularly at two sets of weekly rounds, participate in the evaluation and management of outpatients in the cardiac arrhythmia clinic and inpatients admitted to hospital for management. On a rotating basis, fellows participate in the EP laboratory in the placement of catheters, programmed stimulation and catheter ablation. Fellows then read and report the studies performed. Experience with uncomplicated and then complex ablation is gained in a graduated manner. Device implants, cardioversions and tilt tests are performed or supervised by the EP fellow as the primary responsible physician with attending physician supervision, guided by the level of training and expertise of the fellow.

The Arrhythmia Service provides a broad range of experience in diagnostic and therapeutic techniques including permanent pacemaker, biventricular and ICD implantation, electrophysiology studies, catheter ablation, signal averaged ECG, arrhythmia device programming and troubleshooting, laser lead extraction and tilt table testing. Ablations include use of the CARTO mapping system, and atrial fibrillation ablation. We typically do 550 ablations, 600 pacemakers, 150 tilts, 150 cardioversions, 150 Biventricular devices and 300 ICDs per year. We usually have 4 full-time electrophysiology fellows, and a steady stream of residents on elective with the EP service. We are affiliated with Dr. Doug Jones, a Ph. D. Electrophysiologist at the University of Western Ontario. Each attending has a range of research interests including atrial fibrillation, devices, AV node physiology, syncope, genetics, clinical trials and databases.
