Born in Asten, Holland, his family immigrated to Canada in 1950 and settled in Lucan, Ontario. He was married in 1964 to Catherine, his wife of 38 years. He is the proud father of three daughters and one son, and “Papa” to seven grandchildren. He was a loving, caring person and very family oriented, with strong religious beliefs. His philosophy was “Believe in yourself, and go the extra mile.”
Chris was a talented musician. In his youth, he was a member of a band called “The Casuals”, for which he was the lead singer and played bass. He was a choir member in St. Patrick’s Parish in Lucan. He directed the Youth Choir, and at the time of his death, he was the director of the “Saturday Night Live” Contemporary/Folk Choir.
Chris was a very knowledgeable person and a progressive member of the harness racing industry. He loved the sport. With his brothers and sister, he owned Frank Van Bussel and Sons Construction Ltd., and his pride and joy, the family farm, Seelster Farms Inc. At the time of his death, Chris was farm manager of one of the most prestigious Standardbred breeding farms in the nation. The tradition continues with his family.
