The Blood Transfusion Laboratory (BTL) is committed to providing
the highest possible standard of service to patients and user departments.
The role of the BTL is to provide accurate results of ordered BTL
tests and safe and timely blood product transfusions for the patients
of the community and region. This is achieved by working with members
of other health care teams and health care providers within London
Health Sciences Centre, St. Joseph's Health Care and beyond. The
BTL works consistantly with the Canadian Blood Services (CBS) to
ensure there is an adequate inventory of blood products for patient
needs.
The
Blood Transfusion Laboratory:
- performs
pre-transfusion testing to provide serologically compatible blood
products to patients based on currently accepted practice
- performs
serological testing for diagnosis of immune disorders or evaluation
of certain diseases
- provides
technical/medical expertise and storage facilities
- coordinates
testing and record keeping for other forms of tissue banking:
eyes, bones, bone marrow and peripheral stem cells
- assists
in training of medical laboratory technology students and medical
residents
- assists
research in transfusion medicine and development of new methodologies
- helps
research efforts of the hospital by providing immunohematology
testing and advice
