Specimen Collection Guide – Chorionic Villi Sampling (CVS)

At least 20-25 mg chorionic villi collected in a sterile container, containing Hank's Balanced Salt Solution (HBSS). Minimum of 5mg for FISH (in addition to a minimum of 20 mg collected for chromosome analysis). Specimen should be taken with enough time to ensure receipt in the laboratory by 10am.

We recommend that patients be referred to the Genetics Clinic at LHSC, VH (Ext.58140). Chorionic villi should be collected in a sterile container containing HBSS and shipped STAT to the laboratory. Receipt of specimens is required same day. Specimens should be stored at 15ºC to 25ºC during transit. Do not refrigerate, freeze or expose to heat.

Note: All specimens should contain at least two patient identifiers and a completed requisition.
