Services in psychology are provided by a number of professionals:
Psychologists and Psychological Associates are registered health professionals and are licensed by the College of Psychologists of Ontario. Psychologists have a Ph.D. or equivalent and residency training prior to registration. Psychological Associates have a Master’s degree and at least 4 years of employment in the field. Psychometrists have a Bachelor’s degree and help Psychologists with psychological testing.
Psychologists and Psychological Associates are licensed to work in specific areas of Psychology, based on their training and experience. Psychologists do not prescribe medication but may work on teams with physicians who can.
Psychology professionals at LHSC work in two areas:
- Clinical Psychology includes the assessment, diagnosis and treatment of mental health challenges, often through talk therapy (psychotherapy). This may include helping people cope with serious health challenges.
- Clinical Neuropsychology focuses on the understanding of the relationship between the brain and behaviour. Services include an assessment of thinking ability (e.g., memory, problem-solving, attention) and determining how these skills may impact day-to-day activities.
