A Nephrologist is a medical doctor who has specialized in the treatment of kidney disease. Nephrologists provide medical care to people with kidney disease including those on dialysis and those with kidney transplants. Nephrologists are not surgeons and do not do major operations although some do kidney biopsies, place hemodialysis and peritoneal dialysis catheters.
LHSC has 18 nephrologists who, as well as providing medical care also teaching young doctors and students and do kidney research.
