Trauma Prevention Programs

Advances in clinical care, surgery, pre-hospital care and the regionalization of the trauma system in Ontario have led to substantial decreases in the injury mortality rates. Further decreases in injuries and deaths will only be realized as the result of injury prevention. The LHSC Trauma Program is committed to the prevention of injury through the delivery of injury prevention programs, advocacy for safety legislation, research and evaluation on injury prevention initiatives.

Our hallmark injury prevention program is IMPACT (Impaired Minds Produce Actions Causing Trauma), a collaborative, multidisciplinary program that educates high school students about the consequences of high risk driving behaviours such as driving while impaired by drugs or alcohol.

Our newest injury prevention program is called the Period of PURPLE Crying and is an in-hospital education program to prevent the devastating consequences of Shaken Baby Syndrome in infants.

Our VIP program for Grade 6 students helps them to make better decisions and resist peer pressure. The presentation discusses medical consequences of poor choices, drugs, alcohol, smoking and unsafe activities. For more information visit VIP: Values, Influences & Peers.

One Road Safety program available for high school students is iDRIVE: ROAD STORIES.  This program helps young drivers and passengers recognize factors that contribute to unsafe driving and develop strategies to avoid them.  The program is a DVD with a running time of 25mins. For more information please see Arrive Alive DRIVE SOBER website www.occid.org

LHSC Trauma program launched iDRIVE on June 3rd, 2009 at Banting Secondary School.  Please see the media release.
