Celebrating Great Moments during People-Centred Care Week

April 27, 2026

Each year, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) celebrates People-Centred Care Week along with health-care organizations across the world. People-Centred Care Week – recognized this year from April 27 – May 1 – is an opportunity to acknowledge and appreciate the dedication of everyone who makes a meaningful difference in how patients experience their care.

LHSC’s Great Moments program was launched in late 2024 to provide a way for patients and care partners to recognize and celebrate the outstanding work of LHSC team members. Over the last year and a half, more than 3,000 staff members have been recognized through the program. Each individual or team that receives recognition is presented with a letter of appreciation from LHSC’s Supervisor and a small item of appreciation.

To celebrate People-Centred Care Week, we’re sharing a few Great Moments submitted by patients, families and visitors over the past several months.

Miyah Ibuoye, Registered Practical Nurse, Inpatient Medicine

"My best friend has been in the hospital for about 2.5 weeks at LHSC’s University Hospital and it has been a tough battle with her acute illness. Miyah has gone above and beyond through her gentle approach, compassion and understanding during this difficult time for my friend.

We want to recognize Miyah for her patience, understanding and kind presence. Her drive in the nursing profession shows through her demeanour. It’s always the small things that count when you are unwell and don’t have the strength to cope. My friend is so fortunate to be taken care of by a nurse like this, and it is truly appreciated. Thank you, Miyah, for everything, but most importantly, thank you for being you!"

Sophie Jones, Child Life Specialist, Paediatric Medical Day Unit

"My eight-year-old daughter has struggled immensely with severe anxiety related to needles for several years. A friend recommended the Paediatric Vaccination Clinic at Children's Hospital. We met Sophie in 2024 at our first appointment at the clinic and she made the experience SO much easier. She was so kind and patient with my daughter - the experience for her was immeasurably better than previous injections in the community. We came back this month for another flu shot, and Sophie immediately remembered us. You could see the anxiety and fear just melt away from my daughter when she saw Sophie and remembered how kind she was the previous year. This year's appointment was even faster with less tears. We are so grateful to Sophie and all the staff at the clinic.

About a week after we visited the clinic this year, my daughter and I were back at the hospital to visit her mom who had just given birth the day before at the hospital. We happened to run into Sophie on our way into the hospital. She recognized us and took the time to stop and say hi and encourage my daughter about becoming a big sister (even though it looked like she was done work for the night). She walked into the hospital to meet her new siblings for the first time with an extra big smile."

Olivia Lemenchick, Registered Nurse, Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre

"We had the privilege of meeting Olivia approximately three years ago when our father became a patient at the Verspeeten Family Cancer Centre. Since that time, Olivia has consistently provided exceptional care, demonstrating both kindness and professionalism. As a nurse, Olivia's dedication is evident in her warm demeanor, always offering a genuine smile and showing a clear commitment to her patients' well-being. Despite the stress of my father’s appointments, we always look forward to them, knowing we will have the opportunity to reconnect with Olivia. She consistently goes above and beyond to make patients and their families feel supported and cared for. We are deeply grateful that Olivia chose this career and that our family had the opportunity to work with such a compassionate and dedicated professional. Thank you, Olivia, for your outstanding care. You are truly a bright presence in what can often be a challenging and difficult time."
