London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) is once again celebrating an exciting milestone: a record-breaking number of babies born in 2025. In total, 6,636 babies were delivered between January 1 and December 31, 2025, which represents a nearly three per cent increase from LHSC's previous record of 6,452, which was set in 2024.
"We are thrilled to celebrate our second consecutive year of delivering a record number of babies at London Health Sciences Centre," says Shannon Maier, Vice President, Children’s Hospital, Women’s Care, Quality, Risk, and Pharmacy. “Our priority is delivering safe, high‑quality, patient‑centred care, and our teams continue to demonstrate exceptional professionalism and commitment to supporting families during a special moment in their lives”
Included in the 6,636 total were 144 sets of twins and three sets of triplets. Thursdays were the busiest day of the week, and July was seen to be the busiest month of the year. LHSC saw the arrival of anywhere from one to 30 babies each day, with the average being 18.
Serving as one of the largest, single-site birthing units in Canada, LHSC supports care and delivery for pregnant people who call the London and surrounding area home, as well as many high-risk patients from across the province. In 2025, approximately 66 per cent of patients who delivered babies were residents of London and 34 per cent lived in surrounding regions.
Over 400 specialized staff from areas such as Midwifery, the Obstetrical Care Unit (OBCU), the Postpartum Care Unit (PPCU), the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU), the Obstetrical/Gynecology Ambulatory Clinic, Family Medicine, Anesthesia, Obstetrical Self-Referral Outpatient Clinic, Inpatient Gynecology and Regional Genetics Program played a critical role in managing the surge of babies born.
“Managing this level of births takes highly coordinated teams who anticipate, adjust and work as one,” says Maier. “Their commitment makes achievements like this possible, and it will be exciting to see whether 2026 becomes another history‑making year for our birthing program.”
