Dr. Amy Lu, a paediatric hematologist/oncologist at LHSC, was recently recognized by a family through LHSC’s Great Moments program.

For Dr. Amy Lu, the path to medicine was shaped by the realization that she could bring two of her favourite worlds together. Blending her passion for science and caring for others, she found a path that ultimately led her to specialize in paediatric hematology and oncology.
“In school, I always enjoyed science and biology,” she reflects. “Practicing medicine offered me the opportunity to connect that passion with caring for people and walking alongside them.”
A partner in every step of the journey
Today at London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), Dr. Lu works with children and families facing some of life’s most complex and uncertain diagnoses. She has learned that even in the most difficult circumstances, children have an extraordinary ability to inspire.
“People often assume that it can be emotionally difficult to work with children in a hospital,” she says. “But it can be surprising just how resilient and inspiring children can be.”
At the same time, caring for children means supporting families through challenging times. Dr. Lu approaches these interactions as a partnership, recognizing that families bring lived experience and intimate knowledge of their child and their condition. Through honest conversations, consistency, and time, an important sense of trust is developed between the care team and families.
“We work together with families to share our different perspectives and make decisions as partners,” she explains. “I try to make sure they know that we have their child’s health at the centre of everything we do.”
It is this approach that led one family to recognize Dr. Lu through LHSC’s Great Moments program, an initiative designed to recognize and celebrate the outstanding work of Team LHSC.
One of many moments
“We have had the absolute pleasure of being placed in the care of Dr. Lu,” the family writes. “Our son has a rare syndrome, which feels ominous, unsettling and brings our family a lot of anxiety. The care we receive from Dr. Lu helps us feel comfortable that nothing regarding our son’s health will be missed and helps us to trust that any decision we will need to make down the road will be the right one. Thank you truly doesn’t feel like enough!”
For Dr. Lu, receiving that message of gratitude was a deeply meaningful and humbling experience.
“I feel tremendously grateful to be recognized by a family through LHSC’s Great Moments program,” she says. “But I know there are countless Great Moments happening across the hospital every day.”
She is quick to shift the focus to her colleagues – a multidisciplinary team of nurses, social workers, nurse practitioners, pharmacists, dieticians, and many others who help deliver compassionate, high-quality care.
“I’m just one part of a much larger team,” she says. “If a family feels confident in the care they receive, it’s because we all contribute to that environment where that trust has been established. It truly is a privilege to do this work together.”
Submit your own Great Moment
Dr. Lu’s perspective reflects the true spirit of LHSC's Great Moments program – recognizing that exceptional care is often the result of many people working together, each playing an important role.
If you have experienced a moment of exceptional care, compassion, or connection at LHSC, consider sharing it through our Great Moments program. Your story is a meaningful way to recognize the people behind the care and to ensure their impact is seen, felt, and remembered.
Celebrating Doctors’ Day at LHSC
On May 1, LHSC joins health-care organizations across the province in celebrating Doctors’ Day. It is an opportunity for us to show our appreciation for the work of more than 1,500 physicians at LHSC who deliver exceptional care, advance research, mentor future clinicians, and strengthen the health-care system each day.
In 2011, The Ontario government selected May 1 as the date to recognize Doctors’ Day in commemoration of the birth of Dr. Emily Stowe, who was the first woman to practice medicine in Canada.
“On Doctors’ Day, we extend our appreciation to LHSC physicians for the unwavering commitment they bring to their work,” says Dr. Adam Dukelow, Integrated Vice President of Medical Affairs at LHSC and St. Joseph’s Health Care London. “Each day, they shape experiences for patients and families, support one another as colleagues, and drive innovation that improves care for the communities we serve.”
