Bariatric Surgery
The focus of this program is the treatment of obesity and obesity-related health conditions, safe weight management, and healthy lifestyle changes. Our comprehensive program offers medical and surgical care, nutritional education and counselling and psychological and social support.
What to expect
Patients who are interested in and may be eligible for bariatric surgery attend a series of assessment and education sessions to help our team determine if the patient will be a suitable candidate for bariatric surgery. It takes several months to meet with the bariatric team for various assessments and testing. During this time, it is important for you to continue to focus on your health and weight loss to prepare for surgery.
Patients who undergo bariatric surgery also receive close follow-up care over a period of at least one year after their surgery. All services are covered by OHIP.
All patients referred to our clinic by the Ontario Bariatric Network come to University Hospital for assessment and education appointments. Please note that if referred to London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC), some clinic appointments may be virtual visits. Types of surgery performed
LHSC surgeons perform both Roux-en-Y gastric bypass and sleeve gastrectomy procedures using laparoscopic or minimally invasive robotic surgery that involves small incisions in the abdomen.
Roux-en-Y Gastric bypass (also called gastric bypass)
Gastric bypass surgery is completed by creating a small stomach pouch out of a portion of the stomach and attaching it directly to the small intestine.
Sleeve gastrectomy (also called Vertical Sleeve Gastrectomy)
Sleeve gastrectomy surgery is completed by creating a small stomach pouch without affecting the small intestine. This procedure is performed in specific situations, as determined by your surgeon.
