Patients who are at-risk for delirium can take the following steps to prevent onset as they prepare for and undergo a surgical procedure.
Optimize health
Preparing for surgery is a bit like training for an important event. Eating well, staying active, and getting good sleep can help your body be at its best on the day of surgery.
Pack
Remember to bring:
- A list of all your medications (including vitamins/supplements)
- Hearing aids and glasses
- Dentures
- Ear plugs or an eye mask to help with sleep
- Comforting objects (blankets, clothes, photos, etc.)
Request
Ask your friends and family to visit during your stay, if possible.
Routine
As able, follow your normal routine for sleeping, eating, activity, and getting up throughout the day after your surgery.
Move
Get up and moving as soon as possible after surgery. You can ask members of your health-care team to help you do this safely.
