LHSC 150: Celebrating 150 years of great care, teaching, and research

Since the opening of London General Hospital in 1875, London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) has been a leader in health care, teaching, and research.  Generations of patients have placed their trust in our care, while our medical teams, researchers, and educators have pushed the boundaries of what’s possible in medicine. As we mark our 150th year and reflect on this legacy, we are excited to introduce 150 Moments, a collection of stories that will celebrate the great care, groundbreaking innovations, and remarkable individuals who have shaped our history and continue to drive us forward.

“Our legacy is built on a foundation of excellence, innovation, and a deep commitment to patient care,” says David Musyj, Supervisor of LHSC. “The 150 Moments series will bring to life the incredible contributions of the people who have made LHSC what it is today.”

In the coming months, we will share stories that span LHSC’s history, from the opening of London General Hospital right up to the launch of our new research institute in 2024. Along the way, we’re inviting patients, families, community members, staff, and physicians to share their own LHSC memories, helping us to celebrate the history of our hospital.

“We know that our history is only made possible by the people who have built it,” says Dr. Christie MacDonald, LHSC 150 Co-Executive Sponsor and Interim Vice Chair, Medical Advisory Committee.  “Whether it’s the research teams behind groundbreaking discoveries or the patients whose journeys have inspired us, we look forward to celebrating the moments that make LHSC so special.”

LHSC has a long history of driving advancements that impact patient care worldwide. In the 1950s, LHSC was home to the first cobalt-60 cancer treatment unit in Ontario, revolutionizing radiation therapy and improving outcomes for countless cancer patients. Over the decades, our hospital has been at the forefront of advancements in cardiac care, cancer treatment, transplantation, neurological sciences, and so much more. As we reflect on these achievements, we also look ahead to the future of health care and LHSC’s ongoing commitment to transforming patient care.

Through stories, videos, and interactive content, 150 Moments will provide an inside look at the history of LHSC. We will take you through the hospital’s evolution from a small general hospital to one of Canada’s largest research-intensive acute care teaching hospitals.

As we reflect on 150 years of care, teaching, and innovation, 150 Moments will also shine a light on what’s ahead.

“With great people dedicated to the highest standard of care, LHSC’s future is just as bright as its past,” notes Deborah Wiseman, LHSC 150 Co-Executive Sponsor and VP, Medicine, Emergency Services, Critical Care, Clinical Neurological Sciences and CNE. “We invite our community and every member of Team LHSC – past and present – to join us in celebrating 150 years of making a difference, one moment at a time.”

LHSC is celebrating 150 years of care, innovation, and community impact by sharing 150 moments from our history. Join us in marking this milestone by sharing your own LHSC story.
