Observerships (Job Shadowing) Information

What is an Observership?

An observation experience (job shadowing) is an opportunity for a student or individual to learn about an area of health care by spending time with a hospital employee who is currently working in that role. This will appeal to individuals who are considering a career in health care and would benefit from seeing what the job would actually involve.

For an overview of observership opportunities at LHSC, please visit the Programs and Services web page

For patient safety and legal reasons, observers are not permitted to conduct any form of direct or indirect care. Observation experiences are typically four hours or less, but can be longer if approved by the London Health Sciences Centre (LHSC) Placement Supervisor and LHSC.

How to request an Observership:

  1. Submit one observership request form to Student Affairs, with ‘Job Shadow Request’ in the Subject line along with an up-to-date resume (PDF only).

  2. Student Affairs will review the documentation provided and if appropriate, forward to the applicable leader for review and confirm with the applicant that the application was forwarded.

  3. When Student Affairs receives an answer, the applicant will be contacted to confirm if the observership has been approved or denied.

If the observership has been approved the observership package will be sent out to the applicant and the LHSC team.

If the observership has been denied the applicant can choose an alternate department and start the application process again if desired.

If the application was insufficient the applicant will be contacted to confirm their application will not move forward.

Please note that only one observership every three months can be completed.

For medical observerships (Physician, Dental, and Midwifery) please visit the Medical Affairs website for more information.
