LHSC celebrates retirees who helped shape 150 years of great care, teaching, and research

As part of London Health Sciences Centre’s (LHSC) 150th anniversary celebrations, more than 100 retirees returned to Victoria Hospital and Children’s Hospital yesterday for a special LHSC 150 Retiree Tea event to reconnect, share stories, and celebrate the remarkable contributions they have made in shaping the organization.

“This event provided a meaningful opportunity to honour and thank our retirees for their exceptional service to our hospitals over the past 150 years,” says Dr. Christie MacDonald, LHSC 150 Co-Executive Sponsor, Department Head of Emergency Medicine, and Interim Vice Chair of LHSC’s Medical Advisory Committee. “Our retirees have generously shared their time, skills, and passion in caring for patients and advancing research, and we are deeply grateful for their contributions.”

The LHSC 150 Retiree Tea featured reflections on LHSC’s past, present, and future; memories shared by retired nurses from their careers at LHSC; historical exhibits showcasing medical artifacts such as nurses’ uniforms from the past; and mingling where current and former members of Team LHSC connected and shared stories.

“Together, LHSC retirees represent a health-care community that has cared for London, southwestern Ontario, and beyond since 1875,” says Deborah Wiseman, LHSC 150 Co-Executive Sponsor and Vice President of Medicine, Emergency Services, Critical Care, Clinical Neurological Sciences, and Corporate Nursing Executive. “Whether at the bedside, in an operating room, a lab, a kitchen, a classroom, or behind the scenes keeping things running, each of our retirees has played an important role in building the LHSC we know today.”

Many retirees who attended the event dedicated their entire careers to LHSC, working at South Street Hospital, Victoria Hospital, University Hospital, Children’s Hospital, and other locations such as Victoria Family Medical Centre, Byron Family Medical Centre, 54 Riverview Ave, and 746 Baseline Road. Over the past 150 years, much has changed in health care at LHSC, but one thing has remained constant: our commitment to helping others and supporting our community, which is the heart of LHSC’s 150-year legacy.
